UN Secretary-General warns “The Point of No Return is no longer over the horizon”

Opening the COP25 conference on Climate Change in Madrid (2nd December 2019) the head of the UN, Secretary-General Antonion Guterras, asked delegates “Do we want to be remembered as the generation that buried its head in the sand, that fiddled while the planet burned?”

Guterres warned the delegates (from over 200 countries) that the “point of no return is no longer over the horizon. It is in sight and hurtling toward us.” He warned “Unless emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are sharply cut, temperatures could rise to twice the threshold set in the 2015 Paris accord by the end of the century. “

The two-week COP25 conference aimed to carry forward the work of the 2015 Paris Accord.

Day 3: it is announced that the target set in Paris for reducing emissions has been missed – substantially. They should have been reduced by 7% by now; in reality, they have gone up by 0.6%. Not a good day.

Much disappointment as COP25 fails to achieve real progress…..

Typical comment following the conference….

So the hope now is that more actual progress can be made when the next conference opens in Glasgow in 2020.
